  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ cup beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (for garnish)
  • Extra Parmesan cheese (for topping)
  • Crispy fried onions (optional, for extra crunch)

  2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter. Layer half of the potato slices on the bottom.
  3. Spread half of the caramelized onions over the potatoes and sprinkle half of both cheeses on top. Repeat layering with remaining ingredients.
